The San Vittorino – San Gregorio da Sassola hike unfolds in the heart of the Monti Prenestini, among woods, rolling hills, and traces of ancient Roman hydraulic engineering.
The trail begins at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in San Vittorino — a peaceful spiritual site and local landmark.
From the sanctuary, the route follows old rural paths through quiet countryside and gentle valleys. Along the way, hikers encounter the Ponte Sant’Antonio, a graceful Roman aqueduct bridge (Anio Novus) with a single arch spanning a green ravine — a scenic and historically rich stop along the journey.
The trail continues through alternating woodland and open terrain, eventually reaching San Gregorio da Sassola, a picturesque medieval village perched on volcanic rock and crowned by the imposing Castello Brancaccio.
This is an E-grade (Hiker) trail, ideal for those seeking a blend of nature, history, and authentic landscapes in the Monti Prenestini area.
