Useful tips for safe hiking

Simple rules on how to plan hikes and be good hikers

It is nice to be able to walk among nature, to feel free and at one with it, and as a good hiker, one must always keep a few simple rules in mind. In fact, never improvise a hike and always being organised and ready is the first characteristic of a good hiker and a true lover of the outdoors. In the following, you will find useful tips so that you will not have any surprises during a trip into the woods.
We will therefore talk about:

  • itinerary
  • clothing
  • respect for nature and the places visited

Practical route planning: from weather forecasts to signage

Even the most experienced hiker is not exempt from following precise rules and behaviour. As much for his own safety and security as for that of his fellow travellers and that of the ecosystem he is visiting.
It is of paramount importance:

  • Plan the route of the hike. And this must be done taking into account the physical and technical capabilities of all participants.
  • Check the weather forecast. It is not enough to check them the day before. This must also be done and repeated during the “walk” to avoid nasty surprises.
  • Know and keep in mind signposts. Atta to help hikers avoid possible dangers; to indicate the direction to take; or even to inform about the difficulty of a path.
  • Never improvise off-piste! Not only for our own safety, but also to respect the fauna and flora that live in the places we are going to travel.
  • Avoid solo excursions. Better in a group. And if you are not sure you know the area, better to use an experienced guide. From whom you should never stray.
  • Have the appropriate clothing.
  • Bring a rucksack with the bare essentials: water, food, sun cream, kiwai, first aid kit.

The latest tips for our hikers

There are rules that should be inherent in a hiker or even just in a nature lover or more simply in a civilised person. But it is always best to repeat them and put them in black and white.
The first one: never abandon waste. For some it will be taken for granted, but walking around our forests, one can observe that this is not the case for everyone, unfortunately.
Second – not least -: respect the environment you walk through. A beautiful flower, a particular plant let’s leave them there. So that they can also be admired by others. And above all, never disturb the animals.
Of course, the most important rule, which must always be kept in mind and followed scrupulously, is to call 112 in the event of an accident, giving detailed information such as: name, telephone number, location (coordinates and altitude), what your condition is and whether there are any obstacles to reach the area.

One certainly cannot improvise as a hiker. But together we can take the first steps. Starting with a few simple rules.
